Checklists

To keep jobs on time, on budget and fully code-compliant, please review the following before our crew arrives:

On Slab Jobs

Our crews measure from the back corner wall on the non-garage side. Please have your framer do the same to ensure foundation and blueprints align. Check that foundations and boxes are square.

Framing Stage

Ensure floor trusses, TGI’s and floor joists do not touch plumbing fixtures such as toilets, tubs or shower drains. Please move or authorize us to move any obstructions promptly to avoid delays.   

Headering Joists

Carpenters should ensure headers do not touch plumbing elements, preventing squeaks from pipe expansion once the home is in use.

Ductwork Installation

HVAC ductwork in crawl spaces should not be installed before plumbing. Obstructions from ductwork may cause delays and could result in additional charges.

Safety Regulations

All fall protection, including safety rails, must be in place before our rough-in crew arrives to start your installation. OSHA regulations prohibit work in areas without adequate fall protection.

Water and Sewer Lines

Locating and connecting to sewer taps can be difficult and time-consuming. Help us quickly locate taps, deep taps, taps under utilities and sewer lines. Delays due to unclear or inaccessible lines may result in additional charges.

Water Meters

Ensure meters are installed early so water is accessible for testing during all phases. We will notify your team immediately if any yokes or sewer taps are damaged.

Final Inspections

County inspectors will automatically fail locked jobsites. Ensure access is available for final inspections. Refer to our Trim Checklist for additional guidance.

Testing Necessity

No job is complete or covered under the PBI Warranty until the plumbing system has been fully tested to our satisfaction. Contact us with any questions.  

Test Scheduling

Test-outs are performed Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Schedule at least 48 hours in advance.  

Testing Protocols

Water is never left on in an unoccupied house. Please follow the same protocol. PBI is not liable for any consequences if water is turned on before testing is complete.  

General Scheduling

Notify us immediately if a job will not be ready as scheduled. Arriving to an unready jobsite may delay our return by several days.

Our Job Ready Checklist outlines the items that should be prepared for our team at each phase of your new home build. Completing these items before our crew arrives helps your project stay on schedule.

Slab phase

Water meter is installed*

Correct plan is available on jobsite

Boxes or stem wall foundations are complete

Foundation/box is square, and measurements are accurate

Address and Permit are posted (required per Building Code to pass inspection)

Backfill is completed; acceptable fill dirt (compactable and free of debris) is available on-site

Locates are complete for all underground utilities (must be called for locates 72 hrs. in advance)

Saw pole (temporary power) with GFI is available

Port-A-Jon is within reasonable distance from jobsite

Any foundation damage has been repaired

(The checklist includes all three phases.)

ROUGH-IN PHASE

Water meter is installed*

Correct plan is available on jobsite

Insulation and T-Ply are installed, where needed, on exterior walls

Insulation and T-Ply installation have passed county inspection

Framing is complete and punched as correct

House wrap is installed

Address and Permit are posted (this is required per Building Code to pass inspection)

Design selections are complete, and have been communicated to our office

Roof sheathing is complete

Stairs and safety rails are installed

Windows are installed, or fall protection is installed over rough opening

Stairs with fall protection are provided, allowing access to all floors of the home

Joists are headered where toilet or tub drains will make contact

Floors and walls near tub/showers are level, square plumb, and correctly sized

The garage floor is poured

A Port-A-Jon is within reasonable distance from the jobsite (per Building Code)

Water heater location and type have been verified

All jobs are clean by the time we arrive

TRIM PHASE

Address and Permit are posted (required per Building Code to pass inspection)

Water meter is installed*

Access to job has been provided for crews and inspectors

Jobsite is clean upon our arrival

Fall protection is installed

Dishwasher and/or disposal are on site

All bathroom floor coverings are installed and finished

All tub and shower surrounds, including grout, are installed and finished

Kitchen countertops are finished

All bathroom lavatory tops are installed

The sink opening is cut out, or under mount sink is installed

Siding is installed so that hose bibs can be installed properly

A water heater platform, or attic catwalk with fall protection accessibility, is built

Garage floor is poured, with water heater protection installed

Framing for master bathtub platform is complete, where applicable

A Port-A-Jon is within reasonable distance from the jobsite (per Building Code)

Final yard grading is complete so that cleanouts can be lowered

Interior painting is complete

*Note: Water meters need to be installed as early as possible so that water is available for testing and inspection during all phases of our work.

Finally, please note that we will never leave water turned on in an unoccupied house, and ask that our partners follow the same protocol. If water is turned on by an outside party before we have completed a job, we do not assume any responsibility for any consequences which may arise. Our Trim Checklist outlines the items that should be prepared before we arrive to complete the trim phase of your new home build. Following these guidelines ensures the plumbing is fully tested and ready for your new homebuyer on the requested date.

To ensure that your jobs are ready for final plumbing, the following should be complete:

Water meters should be installed. This will allow testing and prevent our crews from needing to return to wash mud out of the water lines and plumbing fixtures.

Concrete area(s) should be complete where a hot water heater will be installed. If required, a protection post must be in place.

All floor covering should be completely installed so that toilets and pedestal lavatories can be permanently set. Tile floors must be grouted to prevent tiles from breaking when we are securing the flange for the toilet.

Kitchen counter tops should be installed, and holes should be cut and/or drilled so that the kitchen sink and valve can be installed.

If the water heater uses gas, confirm venting (a standard vent, which is through the roof, or a direct vent, which terminates through the adjacent outside wall).

Water and sewer lines should be run and tied in. Final inspections cannot be called and jobs cannot be tested until this has been completed.

Interior painting should be completed before plumbing trim is started.

Access should be provided to whirlpool motor for final inspection. Please consult manufacturer’s websites for access information.

Please confirm water heater type (gas, electric or tankless).

Water heater stands for heaters in excess of 50 gallons must be provided.

Dishwashers and disposals should be present by the morning of our scheduled install.

All marble/granite lavatory tops should be in place, as well as any marble/tile installed in tub and/or shower areas. All tile areas must be grouted.

All under mount sinks must be installed at least 24 hours before trim is scheduled.

If your yard has been final graded, seeded and straw laid, your sewer clean outs will be cut to grade. Inspectors will need to locate these clean outs.

Access should be provided to the job site. County inspectors will automatically fail a job that is locked or inaccessible.

Note: As you contact our office to schedule Trims, please make sure that we have received all of the latest information pertaining to the job. If there have been significant changes during the course of construction, please inform our office staff as early as possible.

Important notes

  • If water is turned on by an outside party before we have completed a job, we do not assume any responsibility for any consequences which may arise.

Vacant properties are especially susceptible to pipe damage during freezing temperatures, even if the water has been turned off. To protect plumbing in new, unoccupied homes, we recommend draining the pipes during cold weather. Follow these steps to winterize a new build:

Turn off the main water valve where the water supply enters the house. This is typically located in the basement, utility room or a mechanical closet.

Open all faucets and hose bibs, starting with the highest fixtures and then the lowest, to allow gravity to drain the pipes completely.

Pour a small amount of non-toxic, biodegradable antifreeze into all toilets and drains, including sinks, tubs and floor drains, to prevent standing water from freezing.

Keep the water off in unoccupied homes and check regularly to ensure no other parties (like realtors) have turned it back on. This applies to models and spec houses as well.

Important: No PBI job is considered complete, or covered by warranty, until the plumbing system has been fully tested. PBI is not responsible for any damage resulting from water being turned on before a job is complete.

Builder FAQs

How far in advance do I need to schedule a plumbing installation job?

Plumbing installations should be scheduled at least five days in advance. Reschedules can be accommodated one to five days of the new requested date. For further information, please contact us.

For homes in the slab, rough or pre-sheetrock phases, please email [email protected]. For homes in the trim, warranty or post-sheetrock phases, please email [email protected]

Please refer to our Job Ready Checklist, located in the section above, for complete readiness criteria by phase. The Trim Checklist applies specifically to the trim phase.

If water has not been approved in a subdivision or meter installation is delayed, we can provide a water truck. Availability is limited, and additional charges may apply.

Standpipes can be installed on any requested lot. To avoid additional charges, please coordinate this request with the slab schedule.

Once a house has been fully tested, we will affix a test tag on the main waterline cutoff stack. Water is never left on in an unoccupied home. Contact us if you have any questions regarding water access.

For homes under warranty, PBI offers emergency service outside regular business hours. All after-hours calls go to our dedicated voicemail system, and an on-call technician will review and arrange appropriate service.
